Welcome
Welcome to the website of Steve Sheridan. I am a potter, living in the urbanised wilds of the Blue Mountains outside Sydney, Australia. I have been potting for 28 years now, and have finally put down roots and built my workshop here in Wentworth Falls.
My work reflects my traditional roots and is made in stoneware and porcelain clay. The bulk of my work showcases Celadon glazes, which stems from an enduring interest in Chinese ceramic history and an admiration for the beauty and simplicity that is seen in common domestic pots made over two thousand years by anonymous potters. Ongoing work
4:57pm Tue. August 12th
This year (2008) is mainly devoted to ongoing production, with some priorities being selecting stonewares from each firing for a show at All Hand Made next year; refining the porcelain white glaze for two-colour glaze combinations, and more developments of ash glazes. The latest ash comes from the previous two years mixed fireplace ash, and has produced a lovely fat creamy semi-matt glaze that shows its best character on dark stoneware clay
UK Exhibition
1:07pm Sat. November 3rd
The exhibition at the Tunnel Gallery has come and gone...it was a modest success, in that sales were a little disappointing, but the show looked great. The pots combined well with Ian Dunns paintings on the wall, but it seems everyone is struggling to make good sales at this time of year. However, it meant I had good pots to take to Sherborne for the Christmas Exhibition there, and for their stock.

Ash Glaze exposition
6:42pm Sat. June 30th
I will be having a small featured artist showing at All Hand Made in Bronte in June which will be a \'body of work\' capsule limited to using just an ash glaze on stoneware. The glaze comes from a single species ash, Blackwattle, and will cover a number of bottle and bowl forms in different stoneware clays.
The work will be on show from Sat. 21st July, with an opening at 3pm. on that afternoon.

at the Markets
6:45pm Sat. May 12th
at the Markets: probably once a month on a Saturday for the last few years, I have had a stall at the Orange Grove Markets, Balmain Rd., Rozelle. I was selling old stock and seconds at greatly reduced prices, mostly all gone now: now I will continue to have a regular appearance, probably last Saturday of each month, and then more regularly for the last three months of the year; I will still be providing mostly older stock: for fresh work and exhibitions see my outlets in Sydney under Locations
It is nice to have feedback from customers at the markets...from people who come back to buy more, or for friends, because they enjoy using the pots..
next markets will be on Sept. 16th... now 2008...and then probably regularly at the end of the month, at Rozelle.

The Workshop
I'm very fortunate to have my workshop situated here on a hill above Jamison Creek, with a long view down the valley and the Darwin Walk meandering along beside the creek.
I built the workshop in 2001. It is constructed of mud-bricks, or more accurately mud blocks; each block is 600x300x250mm, which means the walls are very solid and give a fantastic thermal performance - inside it remains cool in the heat of summer, and in winter when the sun streams through the north facing windows I don't need a heater on till the sun goes down. It is a lovely calm and peaceful place in which to work, and each day I count my blessings in being there.
