Porcelain

Porcelain is produced from the finest white clays. The composition of the body is such that when it is fired (to approximately 1300 C ) it enters a complete melt; that is, the body becomes a glass. The magic of porcelain is that under these conditions it still retains its shape, though of course, if fired too high, it can easily warp and eventually slump!
The consequence of this transformation is that when cooled, good porcelain is translucent. The 'Southern Ice' porcelain body I use is indeed translucent; this can be seen quite clearly in the small bowls I make as 'tea-lights', which have a beautiful glow when a candle is lit inside them.
